City of West Palm Beach  Belvedere Road Improvements Project

Owner:  City of West Palm Beach

Size:  3 Miles

Scope: Planning, Design, Permitting & Construction Management

Cost:   $1,250,000

CKA provided Engineering Services & Construction Management for the construction of an “urbanized” section of roadway improvements to include traffic calming.  This section of roadway posed interesting challenges due to its age and elevations.  Drainage and streetscape designs were provided that enabled the City Commission to deliver an outstanding project with minimal downtime and at minimal cost.

City of West Palm Beach  EOC / Emergency Standby Power

Owner: City of West Palm Beach

Size: Emergency Standby Power Systems Design

Scope: Planning, Preliminary Design Study, Cost Estimate

Cost: Study

CKA provided planning, preliminary design study, and cost estimates to the City of WPB for proactive planning for the City’s procurement of emergency standby power systems.  The City of WPB procured the consulting services of CKA to plan for the installation of standby power generation systems and electrical modifications to the City Police Station, Fire Station No. 01, Gaines Park, Pleasant City, and South Olive Park.  Several of these facilities have the capacity to be converted to Emergency Operations Centers.

Trinity United Methodist Church of Palm Beach Gardens  Administrative Offices Addition

Owner: Trinity United Methodist Church of PBG

Size: 4200 Sq. Ft.

Scope: General Contracting

Cost: $410,000

CKA provided General Contracting for the church’s new administrative office addition and existing office remodeling.   This project encompassed demolition work and the remodeling of an existing structure to provide approximately 3000 sq. ft of new office space and 1200 sq. feet of remodeled office space.  The structure was constructed of masonry with red brick veneer.  This project was delivered under budget and before scheduled deadline.

United States Department of Agriculture  USDA Horticultural Research Laboratory, Ft. Pierce, FL

Owner: U.S. Department of Agriculture

Size: 175,000 Sq. Ft. 314-Acre Farm w/ Support Facilities

Scope: Design and MEP Resident Construction Management

Cost: $26,900,000

CKA provided design and Construction Management Services for all Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Utilities systems for this project.  The construction project for this facility included a 314-acre farm site and a 175,000 square foot full service research laboratory.  The research facility includes 47 laboratories, administrative wing, various office space, Fruit Treatment and Packaging facility, Insectary facility, and Support Buildings.  The laboratories incorporate gas systems including argon, helium, natural gas, nitrogen, de-ionized water, compressed air, and vacuum.  A complete automated HVAC and Hydronics systems package provides Air Quality Management for the entire facility housed in a stand-alone physical plant.  The facility includes standby power generation equipment in the event of an emergency.  A stand-alone independent incinerator plant was constructed for the disposal of hazardous chemicals at the Research facility.  The Research facility also includes 36 full service Greenhouses, which include automated environmental control systems and irrigation systems.  Air-Conditioned environmental controls were constructed for 9 of the 36 Greenhouses.  All of the signals monitored throughout the facility are collectively processed through a Building Automation System (BAS), which enables complete operation of the facility through remote operation from on-site as well as via telephone/modem connection off-site.  This feature is critical to control upsets within the 16 Cold Rooms, 7 Environmental Growth Chambers, and Greenhouses.   The communication systems throughout the facility include Category 5 cabling and fiber-optic networking to a state-of-the-art computerized hub enabling the user to completely and automatically track incoming and outgoing calls and costs to various project numbers.  The 314-acre Farm Site utilizes a state of the art irrigation system drawing stored water from a 2 ½ acre lined pond which also incorporates a liner for coverage of the pond. The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing package for this facility is an impressive one and CKA has been instrumental in providing engineering and management services to expedite the successful delivery of this project to the United States Government.  The construction of the Utilities package, managed by CKA, consisted of approximately 4 miles of water main and 5 miles of force main and lift station.  These systems required a total of 7 directional bores using HDPE piping.  CKA procured the operating permits for the utilities package from FDEP.

CKA’s involvement in this project was well received by the prime A/E firm, the US government contracting agency, and the end-user.

LSG Skychefs, Inc.  Miami International Airport Facility

Owner: LSG Skychefs, Inc.

Scope: Design / Build / Permitting: Building Drains, Concrete Replacement, Synthetic Flooring

Cost: $215,000

CKA provided engineering “design/build services to provide additional building drains, concrete replacement at the international dumpster and autoclave area, and chemical resistant synthetic flooring material. In an unprecedented timeframe of 5 days, CKA implemented and completed and returned into full operation, the entire international operations.  LSG Skychefs is responsible for delivering all meals and drinks to all international flights out of the MIA.  This operational shutdown of a multi-million-dollar facility facilitated the construction timeframe for CKA. The project was delivered 2 days early.

Florida Army National Guard Lift Station Rehab & Vehicle Washwater Conveyance System

Owner: Florida Army National Guard (FLARNG)

Location: Avon Park, FL

Scope: Design & Construction Services

Cost: $275,000

CKA provided design and construction services for this project to comply with environmental regulations mandated by DEP. Because of the elimination of an NPDS permit and growing concerns to reduce contaminated discharge to stormwater systems, this project was mandated by the FDEP to discontinue discharging vehicle washwater into the stormwater system and conveys the pretreated washwater to the local WWTP.  The project involved design and permitting to achieve conveyance of washwater from a sand separator and oil/water separator to a new lift station, which pumped the wastewater through a newly constructed force main to the local WWTP.   Additionally, an existing sanitary lift station was rehabbed to provide increased flow and head.  This project was well received by the FDEP, FLARNG and the Air Force as they are the landlord for the FLARNG.
